Chapters 66 and part of chapter 67

With Kathryn evacuated, Erich tries to save as much as possible from the storm. Like everybody else after the storm, they will have to evacuate northwards in order to survive.


Current writing status : Chapter 67 is still underway, chapters 45 and 46 are still not written.

What has been written in chapter 67 really is a work in progress, a number of things are not really settled. Usually I published the chapters when a couple of other chapters had been written, in order to fix a number of elements.


As expected, I am not able to resume writing at the moment. I'm already glad to be able to sleep properly since last week (as you can guess, I'm the same kind of on/off workoholic as Erich...)

I except to be able to resume writing in July, or more probably in October.

Mackenzie describes the brutal events in town during "Grinding Night". Erich and his people organise the place as best as they can, keeping in mind they're now being observed.

Erich meets with Anna-Lena and her companion in their own hideout, discussing long-term aspects of the crisis.
In the following chapter, Matthew takes Erich to a tour of the meat processing facility he set up hastily.

About chapter 63 : it is both about cannibalism and industry. It is a somewhat disturbing  moment, comparable to a documentary about meat processing. In my humble opinion, it is not really possible to imagine and describe cannibalism, and even less in such a fashion. Nevertheless, I think it had to be adressed in the novel, since it's an integral part of that post-apocalypstic environement.

I'm several days late when posting this : not only has the opportunity window closed, but on the contrary I find myself with lots of work on my hands.

I had to find both the time and the energy to review these two chapters for errors, and I'm not sure to be able to do the same for chapters 64 and 65 until the weekend. Therefore, these chapters will be posted on Saturday the 18th.

On the long term, it's more probable than not that I won't be able to resume writing in the following months. I always prefer to write several chapters in a row rather than write them in a piecemeal fashion.

Another aspect, which is not "fishing for compliments" but is also an issue is that I get next to no feedback for my work, although there are more and more people visiting the blog and viewing the updates.

The quick and deep changes left Erich and Kathryn estranged one to the other. Erich chooses to flee into work, where he is much needed. He discovers the food situation in town and the grim options that are left.

The pivotal question of agriculture and food in general will be addressed in these two chapters, including a first glimpse at cannibalism. A subsequent chapter will dwelve more in this aspect, as the book is also a reflection upon technology.

The figures provided are indicative, since I'm not a farmer. It should, however, illustrate the scope of the problems at hand.

The different waves of refugees crash into town and achieve to disrupt it. Now Erich's people are on their own and have to fend off an organised attack on the single place where there wheat can still be found. Brutality and barbaric methods are also becoming more common.

The town is given a respite, enough for the people in Erich's Program to settle some political matters,  evacuate some more people and food, and finally remove as much opposition for the survivors as possible.

Current writing status : Chapter 63 is finished.

I intend to finish chapter 64 before the end of the year. It will see the end of the transitory period in the story. The story is also slowly coming to an end, which will be reached at around chapter 85, ten more than previously thought.
